Mayor Paula Dierenfeld on the Vibrant, Growing Community

By March 11, 2026No Comments

Quality of life and workforce attraction make Johnston the right place to grow.

Johnston has been home to Pioneer since the seed brand’s founding in 1926. But the reasons to locate Corteva Agriscience’s seed business headquarters in Johnston go beyond tradition and strong roots – it is bolstered by the great quality of life, school system and workforce advantage in the growing community.

Johnston Mayor Paula Dierenfeld shares her perspective on the community’s passion and commitment to Corteva for its next chapter.

Johnston is one of Iowa’s fastest growing suburban communities – jumping from 8,649 in 2000 to nearly 26,000 residents today – and ranks as one of the state’s highest educated and highest income-earning cities. It also is home to one of the youngest populations (median age is 38.4).

The city’s growth stems largely from its exceptional public schools, drawing young families to the area. The Johnston Community School District recently earned recognition as one of only 17 Apple Distinguished School Districts nationwide.

And unlike other places in the U.S., Johnston schools have a tight connection to agriculture education and appreciation. For example, according to Mayor Dierenfeld, students of all ages learn about Henry A. Wallace and his impact on global agriculture.

This educational foundation creates a steady talent pipeline and long-term workforce advantage. The city’s location near Iowa State University, Drake University and Des Moines Area Community College pulls graduates with the right background to Johnston’s major employers, including Corteva, John Deere Financial and the Iowa National Guard.

Beyond these large employers, the city is home to organizations of all sizes and industries, forming a strong economic backbone that can attract top talent.

And let’s not forget the community’s quality of life outside the office and classroom. Recent investment in recreational amenities such as parks, trails and water trails and a bustling Town Center with shopping, restaurants and community events, ensure citizens of all ages and backgrounds don’t have to go far to find adventure.

Critical to truly taking advantage of the great education, local attractions and family fun is a sense of safety. A 2024 survey of community members showed that 94% expressed satisfaction with the feeling of safety in Johnston – which is 45% higher than the national average in city quality-of-life rankings.

Johnston has long been the right place for Corteva, its employees and their families. The vibrant community is ready to welcome the seed business headquarters home for the next chapter. Join us in encouraging Corteva leadership to “Plant the HQ Here” by signing this petition.
